How to Get to Whittier, Alaska

Whittier is a unique destination—reachable by road, rail, and sea—but only through a single shared tunnel. It’s one of the most scenic and unusual gateway towns in Alaska.

How to Get Here

By Car

From Anchorage, drive south on the Seward Highway (AK-1) for 47 miles to the Portage Glacier Road turnoff.

From there, it’s another 12 miles to the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel—a 2.5-mile single-lane tunnel that alternates directions for vehicles and trains.

Tunnel passage is controlled on a timed schedule and includes a small fee. Note: Vehicles must follow the scheduled opening times, so plan ahead.

Note: Always check the official Whittier Tunnel Schedule before you travel.

Total drive time from Anchorage: ~90 minutes

By Train

The Alaska Railroad offers summer service to Whittier from Anchorage as part of the Coastal Classic or Glacier Discovery routes. The train passes through stunning mountain and coastal scenery, entering Whittier via the shared tunnel.

By Cruise or Ferry

Whittier is a major cruise port on Prince William Sound. Many small-ship cruises begin or end here.

It’s also served by the Alaska Marine Highway System, with connections to Valdez and other ports (summer only).
