By Cruise Ship + Rail or Road

Travelers arriving by cruise ship in Whittier or Seward often add Girdwood as part of a pre- or post-cruise itinerary. Transfer options include the Alaska Railroad, rental cars, or private shuttles.

Driving Tips & Seasonal Considerations

  • The Seward Highway is a National Scenic Byway, offering dramatic coastal and mountain views—watch for wildlife and photo pullouts.
  • Winter travel is common, but roads can be icy from October through April. AWD or 4WD is recommended, and studded tires are legal after September 15.
  • Summer brings long daylight hours and higher traffic, especially on weekends and holidays. Plan fuel and food stops early if heading to/from Seward.
  • The Turnagain Arm area is prone to sudden weather changes. Always check weather and road conditions before traveling.
