About Alaska Standard

Hey! Welcome to Alaska Standard! I hope I’m able to answer some questions and give you helpful, real advice as you plan your trip to Alaska.

When I was younger, I remember a lot of my friends saying, “I can’t wait to get out of this town,” and it always struck me as odd because I loved being here. Summers feel endless when the sun barely sets, and winters have their own kind of magic with the northern lights and snow that sparkles under your feet. I’m a lifelong Alaskan with a deep love for this place, and that’s exactly why I created this site.

People come to Alaska for all kinds of reasons: travel assignments, school, bucket list trips, visiting family, or because the military brought them here. Whatever your reason, I’m excited for you to be here. Alaskans are welcoming, and our culture is woven into everything we do. I truly enjoy sharing this state with people who have chosen to experience it.

This site is built from a mix of personal experience, local knowledge, and research. I’ve also used AI to help build out some of the pages and images so I can share helpful information across the entire state -even for places I haven’t personally explored yet. As I continue traveling and experiencing more of Alaska myself, I’ll be updating pages and replacing images with my own photos over time.

A lot of the photos you’ll see here are already my own. If you’d like to explore more of Alaska through my lens, check out the photo gallery where you can view and purchase images I’ve taken around the state Here.

What Now?

Go check it out! Find a city on the map and click into the page I’ve created for it. You’ll find the best things to see and do in the area, along with helpful direction on where to go next. I’ve also included places to eat and hike—because if there’s one thing Alaska has plenty of, it’s incredible land to explore and great food to enjoy.

You can also explore the Alaska Resource Guide, where I’ve built out pages on wildlife, natural features, plants, and more to help you better understand what makes this state so unique.  And if you’re getting ready for your trip, check out the Alaska Gear section for recommendations on what to bring so you’re prepared for the conditions here.

I hope this helps you plan your trip. If you have suggestions or think I missed something worth including, feel free to reach out. I’m always open to improving this website and making it more useful for others!!

All the best,

Jackie

AK Standard's Mission

Some of the hardest things about traveling is you have to rely on someone else’s opinion online to decide what you’d like to do when visiting.  When I am telling people where to go in my hometown, I give them all the best places so you can love them too.  You will find out what I know about restaurants, the best activities to engage in (and the ones not to), and some of the best tour companies out here.  I’d like to show you the options before you come so you can have the best time here.  I have expanded these things to all the major cities in Alaska.  But I take it one step farther, I love traveling Alaska too, so when I visit other places, I’ll let you know how it goes!  Then you can make your own decision.

Ak Standard's Values

To love and protect Alaska by showcasing the things I have learned while living here.  To promote the beauty of Alaska’s diverse cultures.  To highlight the Alaskan who is a person like no one you have met.  To give back to our community by highlighting businesses in the differing cities.  To bring these things to our visitors to empower and educate so you can appreciate this glorious state when you come to visit.
