What to pack for hiking in Alaska (1–3 days).
A Simple checklist with gear, layers, and safety essentials for real backcountry conditions.
Alaska Hiking Packing List (1–3 Days)
This list is for day hikes up to short overnights. It is obviously not an exhaustive list, or concrete guide – feel free to add or remove what you want. You are able to click into each item to find them on amazon. Don’t feel like you need to get that specific item, I listed what I use/have. Once you know what to get, you should do some research into other brands in case something fits better for you.

- Rain Pants
- Hiking Pants (Quick-Dry)
- Wool Hiking Socks (Extra Pair)
- Beanie
- Lightweight Gloves
- Sun Hat – I just use a ball cap really
- Sunglasses – It doesn’t matter what kind but I prefer polarized so you can see better under the water
Food & Water
- Water Bottles or Hydration Bladder – for the backpack, I just use an insulated water bottle, any kind works.
- Water Filter
- Electrolyte Packets
- Energy Bars
- Trail Mix – Any kind works
- Lightweight Meals (if overnight) – I also pack meat and cheese sticks, premade lunch and dinner as well

- Trekking Poles
- Multi-Tool Knife
- Fire Starter (Lighter + Ferro Rod)
- Compact First Aid Kit
- Duct Tape (Wrapped)
Alaska-Specific
- Mosquito Head Net
- Bug Spray
- Waterproof Phone Case
- Binoculars (Optional) – I’d recommend getting some good ones if you are going to get them, if not, just use your phone’s zoom. However, if you are going to Denali, I’d get some – the wildlife is seen but sometimes it’s pretty far from the road.
Overnight Add-Ons (If Needed)
- Ultralight Tent
- Sleeping Bag
- Sleeping Pad
- Compact Camp Stove – I just use a jet boil and bring meals I can make with hot water if i’m out this amount of time.
Small Extras
- Wet Wipes – doesn’t need to be this kind or this many, however this is a daily use item while camping and hiking for me
- Ziploc Bags – these are bear proof
- Notebook & Pen
- Hand Warmers – I prefer a rechargeable one, but if you are coming in the summer, you don’t need this.
- Deck of Cards – Always in the camp box, you never know
