Where to Hike in Whittier, Alaska
Easy & Scenic Trails
Portage Pass Trail
One of Whittier’s most iconic hikes, this 4-mile roundtrip trail begins near the Whittier side of the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel and climbs steadily to a high pass with sweeping views of Portage Glacier and Passage Canal. Wildflowers and alpine tundra line the trail in summer, and while the first mile is steep, the rest of the hike is relatively easygoing.
Whittier Creek Trail
This gentle 0.75-mile out-and-back trail starts behind the railroad depot and follows Whittier Creek to a small waterfall. It’s a great low-effort option for families or visitors who want a quick nature break without leaving town.
Byron Glacier Trail
Located just outside of Whittier in Portage Valley, this 1.5-mile roundtrip trail starts near the Byron Glacier Road and leads to a stunning view of Byron Glacier. It’s a mostly flat, family-friendly path that winds through a lush valley with glacier-fed streams and wildflower meadows.
Moderate to Challenging Trails
Emerald Cove Trail
Winding 3.2 miles roundtrip through dense rainforest and across soft muskeg terrain, this trail begins near Whittier Creek and follows the coastline to a secluded emerald-colored cove. It’s moderately challenging due to its uneven and sometimes muddy terrain, but the reward is a peaceful, quiet shoreline that’s perfect for a picnic or paddle break.
Horsetail Falls Trail
This short but steady 2-mile roundtrip trail climbs about 600 feet from town to a roaring seasonal waterfall. The ascent begins behind the residential area and quickly rises to provide panoramic views of Whittier and Passage Canal. It’s a favorite among birdwatchers and photographers looking for dramatic vistas close to town.
Trail of Blue Ice
This nearly 5-mile one-way trail runs through the heart of Portage Valley, starting at Moose Flats Day Use Area. The terrain is mostly flat and accessible for both hikers and cyclists, with interpretive signs and occasional glacier runoff crossing the trail. It’s ideal for a long, scenic day outing suitable for all ages.
