Nabesna Road (Wrangell–St. Elias) – Day Trips from Tok

About 40–60 miles south of Tok near Slana, the Nabesna Road offers classic Interior Alaska hikes with volcanic geology and big-mountain views.

• Trail Creek / Caribou Creek Area
  Backcountry routes from roadside creek crossings; choose your distance on well-traveled social trails to ridges and passes.

• Skookum Volcano Trail
  4–5 miles round-trip into an ancient volcanic caldera with striking canyon walls; moderate with some scree.

Lakeside Strolls & Picnic Spots

  Easy shoreline paths and beachy picnic spots 15 miles northwest of town; great for sunsets and waterfowl viewing.

Tips & Safety

• Carry bear spray; make noise in brushy sections and give wildlife space.
• Road mileposts are your best navigation reference—services are sparse between trailheads.
• Check current trail and road conditions at the Tok Visitor Center and Tetlin NWR before heading out.
