Nenana River

The Nenana River runs along the edge of Denali National Park and is one of the more accessible rivers for visitors looking to experience moving water up close.

You can see it from the Parks Highway, and it’s especially noticeable near Denali where it cuts through a canyon with strong, fast-moving current.

This river is known for whitewater rafting. Guided trips run regularly during the summer, offering everything from mild scenic floats to more intense sections with rapids.

The water is glacial-fed, cold, and fast. Even in calmer sections, the current is strong, and the temperature stays low year-round.

The surrounding scenery is a big part of the experience—mountains, cliffs, and wide views of the Alaska Range.

The Nenana is one of the more approachable ways to experience Alaska river systems, especially if you’re not heading into remote backcountry.
