Alsek River

The Alsek River flows from Canada into Southeast Alaska, eventually reaching the Gulf of Alaska. It’s one of the most scenic and dynamic river systems in the state, passing through glaciers, mountains, and coastal terrain.

Access is typically by guided expedition or fly-in trips. This is not a quick visit—it’s usually a multi-day rafting or wilderness experience.

The river changes character as it moves. In some areas it’s wide and steady, and in others it becomes more technical, with stronger current and changing conditions.

One of the defining features of this river is its connection to glaciers. You’ll see ice, glacial runoff, and large-scale landscape changes along the route.

Wildlife is present throughout the area, and the overall experience feels remote, even by Alaska standards.

The Alsek is one of those rivers people plan entire trips around. It’s not casual—it’s a full commitment, and that’s exactly why people go.
