Alagnak River
The Alagnak River, often called the “Branch River,” is a designated Wild River in Southwest Alaska. It’s known for strong salmon runs, wildlife activity, and float trips through relatively untouched landscape. You can reach the river by plane, usually from King Salmon or nearby areas, and from there it becomes a multi-day experience if you’re traveling by raft or boat.
The river flows through a mix of forest, tundra, and wetlands, with steady current and sections that are manageable for experienced floaters. It’s not as aggressive as some glacial rivers, but it still requires awareness and planning.
Fishing here is a major draw. Salmon runs bring in anglers, but they also bring in bears, which are commonly seen along the riverbanks.
Because it’s designated as a Wild River, development is limited, which helps keep the experience more natural and less crowded.
The Alagnak is one of those places where you’re fully immersed in the environment the entire time you’re on it.
