Galerina Mushrooms in Alaska
Galerina in Alaska
This is one of the most easily overlooked dangerous mushrooms.
Small. Brown. Nothing about it stands out.
That’s what makes it a problem.
Where It Grows
Galerina prefers:
• Dead wood
• Rotting logs
• Damp forest environments
• Moss-covered areas
It often grows in clusters and blends in with its surroundings.
How to Identify It
The cap is:
• Small
• Brown to yellow-brown
• Smooth and slightly shiny when wet
The stem is thin and fragile.
It can look very similar to small edible mushrooms, especially to beginners.
Is It Poisonous?
Yes.
Highly toxic.
Galerina contains the same type of toxins as destroying angel and can cause severe organ damage.
Because it resembles harmless species, it is one of the more dangerous mushrooms for inexperienced foragers.
Why It Matters in Alaska
Not all dangerous mushrooms are obvious.
Some of the worst are the ones that look ordinary.
Galerina is a reminder that small, common-looking mushrooms can carry serious risk.
