Destroying Angel Mushrooms in Alaska

Destroying Angel in Alaska

This is one of the mushrooms you never guess on.

Pure white. Clean-looking. Easy to overlook.

Destroying angel is one of the most dangerous mushrooms found in Alaska.

Where It Grows

Destroying angel prefers:

• Forested areas
• Moist soils
• Spruce and mixed woods
• Undisturbed ground

It grows in connection with trees and often appears in late summer.

How to Identify It

The mushroom is entirely white:

• White cap
• White gills
• White stem

It has:

• A ring on the stem
• A bulb at the base

It looks simple, clean, and harmless. That’s what makes it dangerous.

Is It Poisonous?

Yes.

Severely.

Destroying angel contains toxins that can cause liver failure and death. Symptoms may not appear immediately, which makes it even more dangerous.

This is not a mushroom you experiment with. Ever.

Why It Matters in Alaska

This is the line between safe and unsafe foraging.

Many edible mushrooms have lookalikes. Destroying angel is one of the reasons people take identification seriously.

If there is any uncertainty, you do not eat it.
