Summit Lake
Summit Lake sits near Paxson at the start of the Denali Highway, surrounded by wide-open Interior Alaska landscape and distant mountain views. It feels much more remote than roadside lakes closer to Anchorage, even though you can still drive right to it.
The area is open and exposed, with low vegetation and long sightlines in every direction. The lake itself is clear and often calm, reflecting the sky and surrounding terrain on still days.
This is not a heavily developed destination. There are basic access points, and people come here for fishing, camping, and as a jumping-off point for exploring the Denali Highway.
In the winter, this area becomes a hub for one of Alaska’s most well-known backcountry events—Arctic Man. The event takes place nearby and draws snowmachiners and skiers from all over, turning the quiet landscape into a high-energy gathering in an otherwise remote part of the state.
Outside of that, Summit Lake goes back to being quiet, open, and largely untouched.
It’s a place that feels simple, but it’s tied into some of Alaska’s more rugged and adventurous culture
