Skilak Lake

Skilak Lake is big, open, and a little unpredictable. Located along the Kenai Peninsula and accessible via Skilak Lake Road off the Sterling Highway, it’s easy to reach but still feels rugged and undeveloped.

This is a glacial lake, so the water has that cloudy blue tone, and it stays cold year-round. Winds can pick up quickly here, and when they do, the lake gets rough fast. It’s not unusual to see whitecaps rolling across it, even on days that started calm.

There are several access points, campgrounds, and pull-offs around the lake, which makes it a good spot for fishing, camping, and boating. It’s less crowded than Kenai Lake, but just as scenic in its own way.

The surrounding area is part of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, so you’re in good habitat for moose, bears, and other wildlife. It’s not uncommon to see animals moving along the shoreline or through nearby brush.

Skilak doesn’t feel polished, it feels raw. It’s one of those places where you stay aware of the weather, the water, and your surroundings.
