Paxson Lake

Paxson Lake sits right at the junction of the Richardson Highway and the start of the Denali Highway, making it a key stopping point for anyone heading into one of Alaska’s most scenic and remote road systems.

Even though it’s right off the highway, it doesn’t feel busy. The area opens up into wide Interior landscape with mountain views in the distance and a sense of space that you don’t get in more forested regions.

The lake itself is calm, clear, and often reflective, especially in the early morning or late evening. It’s a great place to stop, take a break, or spend some time fishing before continuing down the Denali Highway.

There are campgrounds and basic facilities nearby, making it a good overnight stop for travelers heading deeper into the backcountry. It’s also a starting point—once you leave Paxson, you’re heading into a much more remote stretch of Alaska.

Wildlife moves through the area regularly, and you’ll often see birds, moose, or other animals nearby depending on the season.

Paxson Lake isn’t flashy, but it plays an important role. It’s the gateway to something bigger, and you can feel that when you’re standing there.
