Eklutna Lake
Eklutna Lake is one of the closest true “Alaska-feeling” lakes to Anchorage. It sits about an hour north of the city, tucked into a long valley surrounded by mountains.
You can drive right to it, which makes it a go-to spot for both locals and visitors. Once you’re there, it opens up into a wide, glacial lake with that same bright blue color you see in other glacier-fed waters.
There’s a well-maintained road and trail that runs along the lake, making it popular for biking, hiking, and even ATV use further back. You can go as far or as short as you want, which makes it flexible depending on how much time or energy you have.
Kayaking here is especially popular. The water is usually calmer than larger lakes, and the scenery stays consistent the entire way—mountains rising on both sides, with glaciers feeding into the lake at the far end.
It’s also a good introduction to Alaska’s landscape if you’re just arriving. You don’t have to travel far or plan much, but you still get that mix of water, mountains, and open space.
Eklutna is one of the easiest places to experience Alaska without overcomplicating it.
