Chena Lakes
Chena Lakes is one of the most popular recreation areas in the Fairbanks area and offers a little bit of everything in one place. It’s located near North Pole and is set up with campgrounds, boat launches, trails, and a large lake system that’s easy to explore.
In the summer, the clear water and sandy beach draw people in for swimming, boating, and kayaking. Fishing is common, and the area is big enough that you can move around and find quieter spots if you want them.
The lake system was actually created in part for flood control, but over time it’s turned into a major recreation area. You’ll see everything from casual day use to extended camping trips, especially during the warmer months.
When winter hits, it shifts again. Snowmachines, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing take over, and the same area that felt like a summer lake turns into a frozen playground.
Chena Lakes works because it’s versatile. It’s not just one thing — it changes with the seasons and gives people a reason to keep coming back.
