Worthington Glacier
Worthington Glacier is one of the easiest glaciers in Alaska to see up close from the road. It sits just outside of Valdez along the Richardson Highway, and you can pull over and be looking at it within minutes.
Unlike many glaciers that require a hike, boat, or flight, this one is right there. There are short walking paths and viewing areas that let you get closer, and depending on conditions, you can approach the glacier face more than you can in most places.
The glacier flows down from the surrounding mountains and sits in a wide valley, making it easy to see the full shape of it. You can clearly see where it’s been and how it’s changed over time.
Even though it’s accessible, it still feels powerful. The ice is thick, the air is colder near it, and you can sometimes hear small shifts or cracking from within the glacier. It has been shrinking the last couple decades so if you get a chance to see it while traveling around Valdez, I recommend it!
If you’re driving to or from Valdez, this is one of the most straightforward glacier stops you can make without needing to plan anything extra.
