Matanuska Glacier
Matanuska Glacier is one of the most accessible glaciers in Alaska, located along the Glenn Highway east of Palmer. You can drive right to it, which makes it one of the few places where you can step onto a glacier without a long expedition.
Even with that access, it doesn’t feel small. The glacier stretches for miles, with deep blue crevasses, ice formations, and meltwater channels cutting through its surface.
Most people experience Matanuska through guided tours. Guides provide traction gear and lead you safely across the ice, allowing you to get much closer to features that would otherwise be dangerous.
Once you’re on the glacier, the perspective shifts. What looked like a smooth surface from the road becomes a landscape of ridges, cracks, and flowing ice. You’re not just looking at it—you’re navigating it.
The surrounding valley adds to the experience, with mountains rising on both sides and the glacier filling the space between them.
Matanuska stands out because it combines accessibility with a true on-ice experience, making it one of the most interactive glaciers in the state.
