Knik Glacier

Knik Glacier is one of the closest large glaciers to Anchorage, but it still feels like a full adventure to reach.

You can’t just drive up to it – well you can, but expect your vehicle to get scratched as the trails are very narrow. Most people access it by guided tour—either by boat across the Knik River, by ATV, or by helicopter. Each option gives you a different perspective on the landscape.

The glacier itself is massive, stretching across a wide valley with towering ice walls, deep crevasses, and constant movement.

The surrounding area is just as impressive—braided rivers, mud flats, and open terrain that shifts depending on water flow and season.

When you get close, you’ll see chunks of ice breaking off, water running through channels, and the texture of the glacier up close.

Because of how it’s accessed, it feels more like an excursion than a quick stop.

Knik Glacier is one of the best examples of how close you can be to Anchorage and still feel completely out in Alaska.
