Columbia Glacier
Columbia Glacier is a tidewater glacier located in Prince William Sound, and it’s known for one thing—constant movement.
You don’t drive to this one. Most people see it by boat tour out of Valdez or as part of a longer trip through the Sound. The ride out is part of the experience, moving through open water filled with floating ice.
This glacier has been retreating for decades, and because of that, it produces large amounts of icebergs. The closer you get, the more ice you’ll see in the water—small chunks at first, then massive pieces drifting around you.
The face of the glacier is tall, jagged, and active. You might see or hear ice calving off while you’re there, sending chunks crashing into the water.
It’s not quiet. There’s movement, sound, and a constant reminder that this glacier is changing.
Columbia Glacier isn’t about getting close on foot—it’s about seeing scale and motion from the water.
