Byron Glacier
Byron Glacier is one of the simplest glacier hikes in Alaska, located near Portage just off the Seward Highway. It’s a short, relatively flat walk that leads you straight toward the glacier.
The trail follows a wide valley, and as you walk in, the glacier comes into view at the far end. It’s a hanging glacier, meaning it sits higher up on the mountainside rather than flowing all the way down into a lake.
Because of that, you’re not walking onto it—but you can get close enough to see the ice, the rock, and the meltwater streams coming off it.
This is a popular stop for families and anyone looking for a quick, low-effort hike with a strong payoff.
Even though it’s easy to reach, you still need to be aware of your surroundings. Rockfall and changing conditions can happen, especially closer to the glacier.
Byron Glacier is one of those places that proves you don’t always have to go far to get a real Alaska experience.
