World War II in Alaska: The Aleutian Campaign & Military History

World War II brought major change to Alaska and transformed the territory into one of the most strategically important regions in North America. After Japan invaded and occupied the Aleutian Islands of Attu and Kiska in 1942, Alaska became an active military zone and one of the only places in North America to experience enemy occupation during the war. In response, the United States rapidly expanded military bases, airfields, roads, ports, and supply routes across Alaska.

The war permanently changed Alaska’s infrastructure, economy, and development, leading to the construction of projects like the Alaska Highway and expanded aviation networks throughout the territory. Today, remnants of World War II can still be found across Alaska through historic bunkers, abandoned military sites, museums, and preserved battlefields.

This page explores Alaska’s role during World War II, the Aleutian Islands campaign, military expansion, wartime construction projects, and the lasting impact the war had on Alaska’s future.
