Where to Hike in Talkeetna, Alaska
Talkeetna has an extensive trail system with many options, from short loops to ridge climbs with Denali views. Below are some of the most accessible and scenic hikes in the area.
Easy & Family-Friendly
- Otter Loop – A quaint 2-mile loop that takes about 45 minutes to complete; gentle terrain and good for a quick stretch.

Talkeetna Lakes Trail System – A 3.5-mile loop through forest and lakeshore. Minimal elevation gain and perfect for families.
Trailhead: 25225 Comsat Rd, Talkeetna, AK 99676 - Lower Troublesome Creek – A simple 0.3-mile walk to the gravel bar of the Chulitna River; excellent for birding and river views.
- Talkeetna Lake Trail – Easy 3.7-mile loop near town. Good for birdwatching; dogs welcome.
Moderate Trails
- Byers Lake Trail – 5-mile loop in Denali State Park, with water views and connections to Kesugi Ridge. Gentle terrain around the lake; excellent for families and photography.
- Little Coal Creek Trail – 3 miles, moderately difficult, leading up onto Kesugi Ridge. On clear days you’re rewarded with some of the best Denali views in the park.
- Ermine Hill Trail – 3-mile moderate trail an hour north of Talkeetna; treeline views and a spectacular summit panorama.

- Curry Ridge Trail – 7-mile round trip beginning at Kesugi Ken Campground. Ascends 3.5 miles to a ridgeline with sweeping Alaska Range views; one of the area’s most rewarding hikes.
