How to Get to Talkeetna, Alaska

By Car

Talkeetna is located about 115 miles north of Anchorage and 155 miles south of Fairbanks, making it easily accessible by road.

  • From Anchorage: Drive north on the Glenn Highway (AK-1), then take the Parks Highway (AK-3) at the interchange in Wasilla. Follow the Parks Highway north for about 70 miles, then turn right onto the Talkeetna Spur Road at Mile 98. The drive takes about 2–2.5 hours.
  • From Fairbanks: Take the Parks Highway (AK-3) south for approximately 4.5 hours. Turn left onto the Talkeetna Spur Road at Mile 98.

By Train

Alaska Railroad serves Talkeetna with daily summer service on the Denali Star route between Anchorage and Fairbanks. The train depot is located downtown, within walking distance of Main Street.

By Air

Talkeetna has a small public-use airport primarily serving flightseeing and charter services. Visitors can book scenic flights around Denali or charter connections from Anchorage and other Alaskan communities.

By Bus or Shuttle

Several seasonal shuttle and motorcoach companies connect Anchorage, Denali National Park, and Talkeetna. These services often coordinate with train and flight schedules, making them a convenient alternative to renting a car.

  • Winter: Driving conditions can be icy and snowy, so allow extra travel time and check the Alaska Department of Transportation’s road reports before heading out. The Alaska Railroad offers limited winter service.
  • Summer: Peak travel season (June–August) brings heavier traffic on the Parks Highway and higher demand for train and shuttle reservations. Book early for both lodging and transportation.
  • Shoulder Seasons: (May & September) Many shuttles, tours, and flightseeing operators adjust schedules or pause service. Always confirm seasonal availability before traveling.
