How to Get to Palmer, Alaska
By Car
From Anchorage, take the Glenn Highway (AK-1) north for about 45–50 minutes. The route winds along the Knik River with stunning views of Pioneer Peak and the Chugach Mountains. It’s a smooth and easy drive on a well-maintained highway.
From Wasilla, head east along the Glenn Highway for just 15 minutes—Palmer sits just past the Mat-Su Regional Hospital and Old Glenn Highway intersection.
From Glennallen, follow the Glenn Highway west for about 4–5 hours, traveling through mountain passes and remote landscapes before reaching the Mat-Su Valley.
By Air
The nearest commercial airport is Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC). From there, you can rent a car and drive directly to Palmer, or take a private shuttle or rideshare service.
Palmer also has a small public-use airport (Palmer Municipal Airport – PAQ) for general aviation, charter flights, and local scenic tours.
By RV or Motorcoach
Palmer is a popular stop for RV travelers and tour buses. Multiple RV parks and campgrounds are located in and around town with easy access from the highway. Tour groups heading to Denali or Glennallen often pass through Palmer as part of the Southcentral loop
