How to get to Kodiak, Alaska

Kodiak Island is located approximately 250 air miles southwest of Anchorage and is accessible only by air or sea—there are no roads connecting it to mainland Alaska.

By Air

Most travelers arrive via Kodiak Benny Benson State Airport (ADQ), located about five miles from downtown Kodiak.

Commercial Airlines:

  • Alaska Airlines offers daily jet service from Anchorage.

  • Ravn Alaska and Grant Aviation provide service to surrounding villages and smaller communities.

Charter Flights:

  • Floatplane and bush charter operators such as Island Air and Andrew Airways offer custom flights to remote areas, including public-use cabins and fishing lodges.

By Sea

Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS):

  • The ferry M/V Tustumena connects Kodiak to Homer and other Gulf Coast ports.

  • Crossing time from Homer to Kodiak is typically 9 to 12 hours, depending on conditions and stops.

  • Service is seasonal and dependent on weather. Reservations are strongly recommended in advance.

Freight & Cargo Barges:

  • Barges transport goods and supplies to Kodiak but are not available for passengers. These operate out of Anchorage and Seward and are essential to the island’s infrastructure.

Travel Tips:

  • Weather in Kodiak can change quickly and cause delays. It’s best to plan flexible arrival and departure times, especially in winter.

  • Taxis, car rentals, and hotel shuttles are available at the airport for transport into town.
