How to Get to Healy, Alaska

Healy is located about 11 miles north of the entrance to Denali National Park, making it one of the easiest towns to reach in Interior Alaska. Whether you’re driving the scenic Parks Highway or arriving by train, getting to Healy is part of the adventure.

 

By Car

Healy sits along the George Parks Highway (AK-3), about halfway between Anchorage and Fairbanks. The highway is open year-round and offers sweeping views of the Alaska Range and Nenana River valley.

  • From Anchorage, the drive takes about 4 to 5 hours (240 miles), heading north through Wasilla, Talkeetna, and Broad Pass.
  • From Fairbanks, the trip is about 2 hours (110 miles) heading south through Nenana and Anderson.
  • From Denali National Park, drive just 15 minutes north past the park entrance.

By Train

The Alaska Railroad Denali Star Route connects Healy with both Anchorage and Fairbanks during the summer season. The Healy depot is a short drive or shuttle from most local lodging.

  • Southbound trains run from Fairbanks to Healy and on to Denali and Anchorage.
  • Northbound trains run from Anchorage to Healy via Wasilla and Denali.

Train service is typically available from mid-May through mid-September.

By Air

There is no commercial airport in Healy, but small aircraft charters can land at the Healy River Airport. The nearest major airport is Fairbanks International Airport (FAI), where you can rent a car or catch the train
